Prohibition

For the episode the producers of the Simpsons did for their show, it was pretty good.  They got a lot of the details and things that were going on during the war quite accurate.  For example, the speakeasies, mobs and gangs, and the corrupt police that didn't follow the law.  Speakeasies are secrets bars that people would go to for alcohol and a good time.  They portrayed the mobs and gangs very well because they showed how they were beginning to basically run the town of Springfield with alcohol and other things.  As for the corrupt police, they would go to the speakeasies and drink and have a great time, but this made them corrupt because they were supposed to be enforcing this law, not allowing it. Over all, the producers made a great episode that was quite accurate with the actual event that took place.
I feel like the scene with the catapult was unnecessary for the episode, mainly because of how innaccurate it was with the actual events of Prohibition.  If I could change this scene I would edit it so it was an actual punishment with the times.  Of course, I would still have it so Homer could get out because he's the best.

Reflection...

Should U.S. citizens be forced to give up civil liberties during a time of war? Should the govt. have to enforce loyalty?

Why should we give up our freedom of speech during war? Is it not our inalienable human right to say what we think? There is no reason why we shouldn't be allowed to speak our thoughts and opinions openly, not even war.  The first amendment in the Constitution gives us the freedom of speech, so the government has no right to restrain our voices; it's purely unconstitutional.

Yellow Journalism

U.S.S. Maine - - - Accident or Murder?
Earlier today the U.S.S. Maine was destroyed by an unforeseen "freak accident" off the coast of Cuba.  Estimated deaths are about 250 sailors, but the count has yet to be finalized.  The cause of the accident is obvious -- it was a Spanish attack!  There have been recent reports and anonymous tips coming in and informing us of their conspiring and apparent involvement.  It is believed that the Spanish either bombed the ship and the innocent victims, or took over the ship and then sank it after robbing it of our riches.  The Spanish have always had it out for us, and now we have no choice but to proceed into war!
